D’ Calypso to Zess Tent captures and tells the story of the history of calypso tents, which are 102 years of existence in 2022. The Tent infuses stories with Calypso, Tamboo Bamboo and steelpan, to show how they influence the modern-day genre of Trinidad Dancehall.

This event is being produced by Adisa Doughlin who has recently completed his Masters in Carnival Studies at UTT. The event is based on his thesis, “Zess/Trinibad Music in Trinidad and Tobago: Is Zess/Trinibad Music an Offshoot of Calypso Music?”

Calypso and Steelpan music represent passive resistance, and both were elements that fostered the national identity, ethnomusicology, social and cultural landscape of Trinidad and Tobago. As the mother genre of Afro-Caribbean music, Calypso music influenced accepted off-shoots such as Soca, Rapso, Chutney Soca, Raga Soca, and Gospelypso –  all of which suffered from ridicule, rejection, censorship and social degradation in one way or another.

“Our aim is to educate the younger and older generations who may not be aware of their cultural history, identity, and present trends. The Zess and Trinidad Dancehall artistes and supporters belong to a young demographic, mainly under the age of thirty years. It is important to legitimize the genre because the wider and more mature public do not understand Zess and Trinidad dancehall music and its cultural significance. Ultimately, this tent will show the cultural significance of indigenous music from Trinidad and Tobago.”
