The Sports Foundation was established by WITCO in 1962. It is an organization that recognizes and promotes the culture of excellence in sports at all levels of society, with the intention of encouraging wider participation in Sport, and creating an environment conducive to the integration of sport as a vehicle for positive social change. Significant progress had been achieved in advancing the organization’s mission, when management of the Sports Foundation was transferred to First Citizens on August 12th, 2004. To-date the Sports Foundation has made remarkable strides in terms of its development and impact.
The Foundation has been hosting the Annual Sports Awards Ceremony in recognition of the excellence displayed by our national athletes. This ceremony is best known for the award of the very prestigious titles of Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year, accolades that are revered and sought after by athletes in all disciplines. Other award programmes are the Youth Sports Award given to the outstanding male and female youth athlete of the year; the Jeffrey Stollmeyer Award given to the outstanding Sports Administrator of the year ; the Lystra Lewis Team Award given to an individual, team or group whose performance has impacted significantly on the national sport landscape; and the Sportsmanship Award which is given to youths for their practice of good sportsmanship. The Sports Foundation also devotes its efforts to the development of coaches, administrators and trainers, and fulfills this goal by organizing various sport seminars and sharing valuable information on sports through the medium of its website.
The First Citizens Sports Foundation is committed through its programmes to playing a significant role in helping build a better society through participation and involvement in sports.
