The Lydian Singers and Steel Christmas 2012

Rejoice and be Glad

The Lydians

Rejoice and be Glad is the title of this year’s Lydian Christmas concert, the second since the passing of their beloved musical director, Dr. Pat Bishop.

In this celebratory year of our country’s history, The Lydians will be presenting a musical selection of religious and secular Christmas songs together with well-loved local Christmas traditions, including da

nce, African and Indian drums, costumes and set design. The centrepiece of the first half will be the vocally challenging Baroque Gloria in D major by Antonio Vivaldi. Other featured works include the stirring and emphatic Hodie Christmas Natus Est  as well as The Shepherd’s farewell, Hector Berlioz’s hauntingly beautiful chorus from L’Enfance du Christ.

Special guest performers this Christmas include a UTT brass ensemble and their guests from the USA; a long-standing friend, Jesus Acosta Ruiz and a young oboe player from the celebrated Venezuelan Youth Orchestra; virtuoso pannist, Len “Boogsie” Sharpe and Phase II; and the Bishop Anstey High School choir.

Apart from the choir and steel, expect to be thrilled by seasoned Lydian soloists, including Eddie Cumberbatch, Joanne Pyle, Glenis Yearwood, Jenny Archer, Janine Charles-Farray David Williams, Camille Sejour and Adafih Padmore.

The finale will be the ultimate Lydian signature piece, the Halleluiah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah accompanied by the Lydian Steel, African and Tassa drums. This year, this piece will be performed as a tribute in memory of Krishna Soogrim-ram who used his gifts as a tassa percussionist to collaborate with Pat Bishop in transforming this celebrated European composition into a uniquely Trinidadian cultural statement.
