The Lydians – Deo Gratias (Thanks Be To God)

The Lydian mission statement affirms, “we recognise that music is a gift and that the ability to perform it is a grace.” It is for this God-given grace that this Christmas the Lydians say, ‘DEO GRATIAS’ (in Latin, “Thanks Be To God”). For our 40th anniversary Christmas concert, the Lydians are giving thanks to God for the music that has driven us onward, for the musical directors who have shaped and inspired us and for the goodwill, kindness and support of all who have helped us along the way.

In this year’s Christmas Story, the Lydians will be visited by three Musical Muses, “La Madame“, “La Reine” and “La Belle Nouvelle“,  all representing Lydian music of the past, present and future . The muses will represent a celebration of the musical evolution of the Lydians personifying the songs we have sung, played and presented through the years. They will also lead us into the future, together, in the spirit of our mission of music to the nation and the world.

The DEO GRATIAS Christmas concert by the Lydians will feature some of the group’s greatest Christmas hits, show-stopping pieces from a 40-year repertoire, 5 Operatic excerpts from the major works performed over the years and a sprinkle of new music and arrangements from our Calypso and Parang traditions.

A special anniversary Gala performance will be presented on Friday 13th December 2019 at Queen’s Hall and will feature a sing-along of Christmas carols with the choir in the Queen’s Hall lobby and a ceremonial ornament hanging for all attendees on the Caribbean Christmas tree.

The Gala night will also offer limited edition 40th anniversary t-shirts and a special 40th anniversary Opera gift basket with one memorabilia token from each of the five operas staged by the Lydians, both on sale at $200 each. A special commemorative programme/magazine will also be available to take home featuring special articles, photos and historical and musical features about the Lydians for $40.
